What pages does a small business website actually need?

Most small business sites need five pages, not fifteen. Here is what each one earns its place doing, and how to decide what to add next.

You have been told you need a website, and every example you look at has a different set of pages. Some have fifteen. Some have three. You do not want to pay for pages nobody reads, and you do not want to leave out the one page that closes the sale.

Here is which small business website pages actually matter, what each one is for, and how to decide what to build first.

What pages does a small business website actually need?

Most small business websites need five pages: home, services, about, contact, and one page that proves you do good work. That is the working set. Everything past those five is useful for some businesses and dead weight for others, so it should be added on purpose rather than by default.

The five work as a chain. Home tells a stranger they are in the right place. Services tells them exactly what they can hire you for. About tells them who is showing up. Contact makes it easy to start. The proof page, whether that is reviews, a gallery or short case studies, is what turns interest into a call.

Do you need a separate page for every service?

You need a separate page for any service you want people to find on Google, and a single combined page for everything else. A search engine ranks a page for what that page is about, so a plumber who wants to be found for water heater replacement needs a page about water heater replacement, not a bullet on a list of twelve services.

The practical test is whether someone would type that service into Google on its own. If they would, it earns a page. If it is something customers only ask about once you are already on the job, it belongs as a section on the main services page.

What about a blog, FAQ, gallery or team page?

These four are the most common add-ons, and each solves a specific problem rather than being generally good to have. A blog is worth it if you will publish regularly, because a blog with three posts from years ago makes a business look closed. An FAQ page is worth it if you answer the same five questions on every call, and it tends to get pulled into Google and AI answers because it is already shaped like questions.

A gallery is close to essential for visual trades like landscaping, remodeling, salons and photography, where the work sells itself. A team page matters when people are hiring a person rather than a company, which covers most clinics, law firms and agencies, and matters much less for product businesses.

How do you decide which small business website pages to build first?

Build the five core pages first, launch, then add pages based on what people actually ask you. A live five page site beats a fifteen page site that has been in progress for four months, because the five page site is already earning calls while the other one is still a document.

You can plan this yourself in about an hour with a pen and paper. Write down every question a customer asks you before they buy. Group them. Each group that someone would search for on its own becomes a page, and the rest become sections. That list is a site map, and it is the same thing a designer would produce at the start of a project.

Target Marketeer builds and runs marketing for small businesses nationwide, based in Greensboro, North Carolina, and most of the sites we build start with exactly these five pages. If you would rather hand the build off, our standard website starts at $3,195, and pages can be added to it as you grow. Our website design and development page explains how a build runs from start to launch.

Can you add pages later without rebuilding?

Yes. On any properly built site, adding a page is a normal task, not a rebuild. A new page on an existing WordPress site typically takes a few hours including copy, images and internal links, which is why most website builds are priced as a base plus a per page rate rather than one flat number.

What does force a rebuild is a change of structure, not a change of page count. Moving from a brochure site to an online store, or changing your web addresses after you already rank, is the expensive kind of change. Adding a sixth page is not. Quick answers

How many pages should a small business website have?

Five is the usual working set: home, services, about, contact, and one proof page such as reviews or a gallery. Businesses with several distinct services usually run eight to twelve pages, because each searchable service earns its own page.

Is a one page website enough?

A one page site can work for a single service business or an event, but it limits how much you can show up in search, because one page mostly ranks for one main topic. If you want to be found for more than one thing, you need more than one page.

Does adding pages help SEO?

Adding pages helps when each new page targets something people actually search for, and does nothing when the pages are thin or repeat each other. Ten focused pages beat forty near identical ones.

What page do most small businesses forget?

A proof page. Most sites describe the work and never show it. Reviews, before and after photos or short case studies are usually what moves someone from reading to calling.

Start with the five, launch, then let your customers’ questions tell you what page six should be. If you would like a second opinion on what your business needs, the Plan Builder walks through it step by step.
