Why AI generated websites are so cheap and what they cost you later

A site for a few dollars a month sounds like a bargain until the calls do not come. Here is what those builds leave out, and which parts you can fix yourself.

You paid a few hundred dollars, or a few dollars a month, and a website appeared. It has your business name on it and it looks fine. Six months later it has produced almost nothing. No calls, no form fills, nobody saying they found you online.

An AI generated website can be live in under a minute now, and for a lot of businesses that is genuinely the right starting point. The problem is not the tool. The problem is what nobody decided. This post covers what those builds leave out, how to tell in twenty minutes whether yours is one of them, and which parts you can fix yourself before spending real money.

What is AI slop on a website?

AI slop is web content that reads correctly and says nothing. The grammar is clean, the layout is tidy, and every sentence could describe any business in your industry. It is not bad because a machine wrote it. It is bad because no human made a single decision about it.

You are looking at slop when you see:

  • Copy that would still make sense if you swapped in a competitor’s name
  • Headlines like “Quality service you can trust” with no proof underneath
  • Stock photos of people who have never been to your shop
  • Five pages that all say the same three things in a different order
  • Invented specifics, like years in business or awards nobody at your company remembers winning
  • A services page listing things you do not actually do

That last one is the tell that costs money. A generated page will happily promise a service you have never offered, and the first you hear about it is when someone calls asking for it.

Why are AI generated websites so cheap?

AI generated websites are cheap because the expensive parts were skipped, not because someone found a shortcut. Entry level AI builders run roughly $3 to $30 a month in 2026, with the lowest advertised prices tied to multi year commitments and renewal rates that often climb sharply once the intro term ends. Squarespace charges a 3 percent transaction fee on some plans on top of your payment processor. A one off $400 site from a freelancer is usually the same generated output with a person clicking publish.

What that price does not include:

  • A conversation about who your customers are and what they search for
  • Real photos of your work, your team, and your vehicles
  • Decisions about what each page is for and what it should make someone do
  • Local search setup so you appear when someone nearby searches
  • A tested path from landing on the page to actually contacting you
  • Anyone responsible when it breaks

None of that is optional work. It is just work that got moved onto you without anyone saying so.

What does a cheap website actually cost you?

The bill arrives as jobs you never knew you missed. A site with no local setup does not show up when someone two towns over searches for what you do, and you have no way of counting the calls that went to whoever did show up.

Four things go wrong most often.

You are invisible in local search. Most generated builds do not connect a Google Business Profile, do not carry consistent name, address and phone details, and do not have a page targeting the thing people actually type. If a competitor outranks you, that gap is usually why. Our post on what to do when a competitor outranks you on Google walks through how to check.

There is no path to contacting you. No clickable phone number on mobile, a contact form buried on page four, no reason given to call today rather than think about it. A site can look good and still convert nobody, which is the whole subject of what actually makes a website turn visitors into customers.

The content is thin. Google does not penalize a page for being written by AI. Its published guidance is explicit that it judges whether the page helps a person, not how it was produced. What it does act against is thin, generic pages produced at scale to chase rankings, and a five page generated site with nothing specific on it lands squarely in that description. You are not banned. You just never rank.

Nobody owns it. No updates, no backups, no security patching, and no phone number to call when the contact form quietly stops sending. On most hosted builders you also cannot export the site, so leaving means starting over.

How can you tell if your website is AI slop?

Run these six checks. It takes about twenty minutes and costs nothing.

  • The swap test. Read your homepage opening paragraph and replace your business name with a competitor’s. If it still reads fine, it says nothing about you.
  • The specific fact test. Find one concrete detail on the site: a real number, a real year, a named town, a named brand you install. If there are none, that is the problem.
  • The phone test. Open the site on your phone. Is the number tappable? Can you reach a contact form in one thumb scroll?
  • The truth test. Read the services page and confirm you actually do all of it, and that the hours and address are current.
  • The speed test. Run the address through Google PageSpeed Insights, which is free, and look at the mobile score.
  • The search test. Search your business name, then search the service plus your town. See what comes up and what does not.

Two or more failures means the site is decoration rather than a working asset.

What can you fix yourself and what needs a rebuild?

Plenty of this is a weekend of your own time, and you should do that part before paying anyone.

Rewrite the homepage opening paragraph in your own words, saying what you do, who for, and where. Take ten photos on your phone of real jobs and swap out the stock images. Make the phone number a real tap to call link. Claim and fill out your Google Business Profile, which is free and is the single highest return hour most owners can spend. Delete any service you do not offer. Fix the hours.

That fixes the surface, and for a lot of businesses the surface was the whole problem.

What you cannot fix from the outside is structure. If the site has no page targeting what people search for, no conversion path built into the layout, and content Google has seen a thousand times, editing the words does not change the outcome. At that point you are rebuilding, not editing. If you would rather hand that over, our website refresh keeps your content and rebuilds the site underneath it, and it runs $1,595. If the business has outgrown the site entirely, a proper standard website build is the other route, and the whole range is on our website design and development page.

Either way, budget for upkeep. A site nobody maintains does not stay working, which is a slower and more expensive failure than most owners expect. Our post on what happens when nobody is maintaining your website covers what breaks first.

Where does AI genuinely help with a website?

AI is a good tool in trained hands and a bad substitute for judgment. Target Marketeer builds and runs marketing for small businesses nationwide, based in Greensboro, North Carolina, and we use AI every day: first drafts, layout options, alt text, turning rough notes into copy. It makes the work faster.

The difference is that somebody reads it. Somebody checks that the claim is true, that the town is right, that the promise is one you can keep. AI on a website works the way a nail gun works. It is faster than a hammer and it does not decide where the wall goes.

Quick answers

Does Google penalize AI generated websites?

No. Google’s published guidance says it evaluates whether content is helpful and made for people, not whether a machine produced it. What it acts against is thin, low value pages made at scale to manipulate rankings, which is what an unedited generated site usually looks like.

Is a cheap AI website better than no website at all?

Usually yes, as a starting point. A brand new business with no budget is better off with a generated site and a claimed Google Business Profile than with nothing. The mistake is leaving it untouched for two years and concluding that websites do not work.

How much should a small business website cost?

Professionally built small business websites in the US generally run from about $2,000 to $8,000 depending on page count, ecommerce and content. Builder subscriptions run $3 to $30 a month plus your own time. We break the number down line by line in how much does a small business website cost.

Can I fix my AI website or do I need to start over?

Fix it if the structure is sound and the problem is words and photos. Start over if there is no page for what customers search, no working contact path, or you cannot export your content from the platform.

How long does it take to see results after fixing this?

Copy and conversion fixes can change enquiry volume within days, because they affect people who are already visiting. Search visibility moves slower, usually one to three months after local setup and new pages go live.

A cheap website is not a bad decision. Leaving it exactly as the machine produced it is. Spend a Saturday on the six checks above, fix what you can, and you will know quickly whether you have a fixable site or a rebuild on your hands. If it turns out to be the second one, that is a conversation worth having before you spend another year wondering why the phone is quiet.
